The Finnish satellite company brings in Panu Routila as demand for dual-use space capabilities accelerates across Europe

Kuva Space has appointed Panu Routila, chairman of Finnish defence group Patria, as its new board chairman, underlining the company’s increasing focus on defence-related markets.

The Finnish satellite company, known for its hyperspectral imaging and AI-based analytics, has so far built its business around civilian applications such as environmental monitoring. The leadership change signals a clearer move into dual-use and defence segments as demand for space-based intelligence grows across Europe.

- This is the moment when space-based AI-powered intelligence stops being peripheral and starts becoming strategic infrastructure, says Panu Routila in a press release.

Routila brings defence industry credentials from Patria - a state-backed supplier of defence systems - alongside experience from industrial companies including Konecranes.

From commercial to defence relevance

Kuva Space’s trajectory mirrors a broader shift in the Nordic space sector, where companies originally focused on civilian use are moving into defence.

Small satellite firms in the region are increasingly being integrated into defence supply chains, as larger contractors seek ready-made capabilities rather than building them internally.

Dual-use technologies have been a key enabler in that transition, allowing companies to establish commercial applications before entering military markets.

- Routila’s experience and vast networks will be invaluable as we deepen our position in defence-related and other strategically important markets, says Kuva Space CEO Jarkko Antila in the press release.

Founded in 2016, Kuva Space is building a satellite constellation designed to deliver near real-time intelligence, including maritime surveillance and dark vessel detection.

The company plans more than 100 satellites by 2030, positioning itself in a market where European demand for sovereign space capabilities is rising.
