When I first became involved in the defence industry more than 20 years ago, it was through Denmark’s procurement of new fighter aircraft.
At the time, Saab attempted to position Gripen as a Nordic alternative to what later became the F-35 programme, then known as the Joint Strike Fighter.
AdvertisementThat proposition gained little traction within the Danish establishment, where political and strategic attention was focused firmly on the United States.
Today, the situation is markedly different. Geopolitical developments have forced a strategic reawakening in Europe, and even in Copenhagen the Nordic dimension has taken on renewed importance.
AdvertisementPut simply, the Nordic region has become relevant again – and for good reason.
Outstanding companies
The Nordic countries share a common cultural foundation and are home to a wide range of defence and security companies. Many deliver high-technology products and services at a genuinely world-class level, supported by a deep and capable base of subcontractors.
AdvertisementTogether, these companies are well placed to meet the urgent demand for greater autonomy as the Nordic region and Europe embark on a historic phase of rearmament. It is for this community that we have established Defence Nordic.
The defence industry is an exceptionally complex and consequential field that, despite its growing relevance, still receives only fragmented media coverage. That is something we intend to change.
AdvertisementOur ambition is to provide a comprehensive overview of the defence and security industry in the Nordic region, offering the sector a single, reliable point of reference.
Through daily news, analysis, features and interviews – primarily from Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland – we aim to connect the industry from both a Nordic and an international perspective.
AdvertisementNordiske Medier is already well established across Scandinavia, making a dedicated Nordic defence and security platform a natural extension of our activities.
Welcome to Defence Nordic.
